TS5 Plus Unboxing & Overview

It Just Works

The TS5 Plus is a powerful device, and to be used to its maximum it requires a Mac or PC with Thunderbolt or USB4 connectivity. This next-generation dock is compatible with Thunderbolt 5, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, USB4 v2 or USB4 host devices.

¹ Requires macOS 15 or above.
² Functionality is dependent on host computer or tablet’s capabilities.

Note: The TS5 Plus is not compatible with Thunderbolt 3 Windows PCs.

*As the TS5 Plus features powerful performance levels, USB-C (5Gb/s & 10Gb/s) host devices are not compatible. To get the maximum performance & features from the TS5 Plus an 80Gb/s Thunderbolt 5 or USB4 v2 host connection is required.

CalDigit TS5 Plus connected to a MacBook Pro.

140W Power Delivery

The TS5 Plus provides up to 140W power delivery for even the most demanding laptops. This makes it ideal for laptops like the 16″ MacBook Pro with M3/M4 Pro or Max chips that require 140W.

Whilst many other Thunderbolt 5 docks state that they can charge at up to a certain wattage, they actually include an insufficient power supply. These docks will allocate host power based on how many devices are connected to them. Some of the host power will move to newly attached devices, thereby reducing the power delivery.

Rest assured that the CalDigit TS5 Plus’ power supply will always provide the full 140W power delivery, and will never drop that performance even when new devices are connected to the TS5 Plus.

For laptops or tablets that require less than 140W, the TS5 Plus will only supply the wattage required by your device.

10 Powerful USB Ports

With 10 USB ports on the TS5 Plus, a mixture of USB-A and USB-C, you have plenty of port connectivity to connect your USB accessories*.

All of the USB ports on the TS5 Plus offer 10Gb/s performance, and 7.5W of power (excluding the front 36W USB-C port which offers 36W).

*USB-C & USB-A ports are for data only. Monitors must be connected to the spare Thunderbolt 5/USB4 v2 ports.

Dual USB Controllers

The TS5 Plus is a unique device, and this is ultimately demonstrated by being the only dock with dual USB controllers*.

Traditional Thunderbolt docks feature a single USB controller that all of the USB, and Thunderbolt ports on the dock share. The TS5 Plus’ dual controllers allow the dock to provide two individual 10Gb/s controllers for increased bandwidth to connected devices. This is a great solution for anyone adding multiple high bandwidth USB devices to their dock.

*The second USB controller is only supported on Thunderbolt based hosts, as well as USB4 hosts that support PCIe. Please contact your USB4 host manufacturer for PCIe support information.

36W of Power for Accessories

The TS5 Plus is a unique device, and with the inclusion of a 36W USB-C port, the TS5 Plus offers a convenient yet powerful front-facing USB-C port which is ideal even for the most power hungry USB-C device.

Not only does the front USB-C port feature 36W, but so do the two spare Thunderbolt 5 ports. Previous generations of Thunderbolt ports featured 15W downstream ports. The TS5 Plus has over doubled that wattage to provide even more power to your devices.

36W is more than enough power for even the iPad Pro, which charges at 20W.

ALWAYS ICONIC

In 2015, CalDigit first introduced the iconic horizontal and vertical design orientation in an effort to innovate and compliment a variety of unique workflows. With the feedback of our audience, CalDigit has continued to pioneer and iterate on this design choice, which has become synonymous with the Thunderbolt Station line of docking solutions.

Whilst others devices may look like the TS5 Plus, there is only one original concept here at CalDigit: listening to our consumers.

The CalDigit TS5 Plus connected to a MacBook Pro and Dual Apple XDR displays.

Single, Dual, or Three Displays

Whether you need a high-resolution display, a high-refresh rate display, or up to 3 external displays, the TS5 Plus has you covered.

Single Monitor

If you’re looking to add a single monitor to the TS5 Plus you can connect it to one of the spare Thunderbolt 5 ports or to the DisplayPort connector. If you wish to connect an HDMI monitor you can use a USB-C to HDMI Adapter or Active DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter ***.

Dual Monitors

Triple Monitors

CalDigit Element 5 Hub Monitor Resolution Chart
* Dual 5K monitors must be Thunderbolt 4 or Apple Studio Displays. Dual LG UltraFine 5K monitors are not supported. 6K monitors can be a Thunderbolt 4 monitor or an Apple Pro Display XDR. DSC (Display Stream Compression) support is required for 6K and 8K resolutions.

** Higher refresh-rates (above 60Hz) may require DSC (Display Stream Compression) support on the monitors and host GPU. The bit/color depth may vary in order to support higher refresh-rates.

*** Some M3 MacBooks such as the MacBook Air can support dual external monitors up to 5K and 6K when the laptop lid is closed (clamshell mode).

**** Currently M1/2/3/4 Macs can only support up to HDMI 2.0b over its Thunderbolt ports. As such, resolutions will be limited to 4K 60Hz when using an HDMI adapter. If a higher refresh-rate is required, please use a USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to DisplayPort or DisplayPort to DisplayPort connection. For more information about a Mac’s external display support please visit https://support.apple.com/en-us/101571 and https://www.caldigit.com/macbook-multiple-monitor-support-with-caldigit-thunderbolt-docks/

***** Results may vary due to OS updates. For external display compatibility over a single Thunderbolt connection on different Windows computers, please refer to the manufacturer’s website.

Bandwidth Boost

When you connect bandwidth intensive monitors to the TS5 Plus it will enable Bandwidth Boost in order to prioritize displays, and provide up to 120Gb/s performance. This will then keep 40Gb/s for the rest of the dock.

The great thing about this is that it will allow for higher refresh rate displays to be connected to the TS5 Plus, as well as three 4K 144Hz displays.

A graphic showing the Thunderbolt Bandwidth Boost of the TS5 Plus.

3 Monitors on Windows

Thunderbolt 5 allows for 3 external monitors to be connected to a Windows Thunderbolt 5 host computer that supports it. Connect two monitors to the downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports, and one monitor to the DisplayPort connector*.

*Triple displays requires a compatible Thunderbolt 5 Windows PC. M4 Apple Macs do not support triple displays via a single Thunderbolt 5 host connection. Thunderbolt 4 Windows or Mac host computers do not support triple displays.
CalDigit TS5 Plus 10GbE Port.

10 Gigabit Ethernet

At the time, the CalDigit TS4 was the first Thunderbolt 4 dock to include a 2.5GbE port, and with the TS5 Plus we are going 4x better by including a 10GbE port.*

10 Gigabit Ethernet offers 10x the performance of traditional 1GbE found in many docking stations, with a data rate of up to 10 billion bits per second.

Traditionally, if you wanted to use 10GbE with a laptop, you would have needed to buy an external Thunderbolt to 10GbE Adapter. This functionality is now built in, saving you time, and valuable desk space. Of course you can use the 10GbE port on the TS5 Plus with 5GbE, 2.5GbE, and 1GbE devices.

Ideal For

*Ethernet is only supported on Thunderbolt based hosts as well as USB4 hosts that support PCIe. Please contact your USB4 host manufacturers for PCIe support information.

Tablets

Connect the TS5 Plus to your Thunderbolt iPad, or Windows Thunderbolt tablet, and take your workflow to the next level.

*Not compatible with USB-C tablets. Full tablet functionality will be dependent on your tablet’s capabilities. Overall functionality will be reduced when using a tablet or phone as a host device.

Rear Host Port

Most generic Thunderbolt docks feature a front host Thunderbolt port which results in messy cable management.

The TS5 Plus’ unique rear Thunderbolt 5 host port features a more elegant solution for a clean desktop experience.

Apple SuperDrive

Devices such as the Apple SuperDrive are recommended by Apple to be directly connected to a laptop as they require extra power. CalDigit has developed a driver for the SuperDrive so that it can be directly connected to the TS5 Plus.
*Requires a one-time driver install.

CalDigit TS5 Plus Offline Charging.

Offline Charging

The front USB-A port, all of the USB-C ports, and two of the rear USB-A ports on the TS5 Plus provide offline charging.

This function allows those specific ports the ability to charge your USB devices, such as phones and tablets, even when the TS5 Plus is not connected to a host device.
