The USB 3.0 port on the Mini Docks provide up to 4.5W (5V/0.9A) of power to a connected device according to USB 3.0 standards. The USB 2.0 port on the HDMI Mini Docks provide up to 2.5W (5V/0.5A) power to the device. If your external bus-powered drive requires more than 4.5W or 2.5W of power, you may see the drive disconnect randomly due to higher power requirements.
Please check with your drive vendor for the peak power consumption (NOT average power consumption).
If your USB device comes with a dual-powered design (bus-powered and self-powered) and it disconnects randomly from the Mini Dock, we suggest plugging in the power supply to your USB device.
Alternatively, you can use an external powered USB hub that provides more than 4.5W from each port to connect to the Mini Dock and plug your bus-powered drive into the hub.
You can also use a USB-Y cable to draw power from both of the available USB ports on the Mini Dock to connect to a single bus-powered drive that requires more than 4.5W of power.
