Today, Intel has officially announced the 5th generation of Thunderbolt™, and we at CalDigit could not be more excited!
Thunderbolt 5 now doubles the performance of Thunderbolt 4’s 40Gb/s by providing 80Gb/s for both transmitting and receiving data.
In order to provide the best display experience, Thunderbolt 5 can dynamically allocate bandwidth by transmitting 120Gb/s and receiving 40Gb/s. This dynamic allocation will provide users with more bandwidth for connecting up to three 8K displays to a host computer.*
Not only has the performance been increased, Thunderbolt 5 now supports above 100W of power delivery.
Thunderbolt 5 can support the following protocols:
- PCIe Gen4
- DisplayPort 2.1
- USB4 v2.0
- USB 3.2
- Thunderbolt 3
- Thunderbolt 4
Of course it will be some time before we start to see computers and accessories with Thunderbolt 5. However, rest assured that all of CalDigit’s Thunderbolt 3 & 4 docks are fully compatible with Thunderbolt 5. This includes the CalDigit TS3 Plus, TS4, Element Hub, and all of CalDigit’s Thunderbolt 3 docks. Simply connect your CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 dock to a Thunderbolt 5 computer and it will work.
CalDigit has been a Thunderbolt developer for 12 years, and we will continue to be at the forefront of Thunderbolt docking as we move into the 5th generation.
*As long as the components and host computer can support the full Thunderbolt 5 specification.
